Backcountry Ski Trips

Fresh tracks.....there’s only a few of ways to get them. One way is to put up with the powder frenzy at the resort on powder mornings, another is to take a helicopter or snow cat, and lastly you can hike for your turns.

Backcountry skiing has been the biggest growth area of the ski industry now for a couple of years. It’s not only the equipment that’s allowing us to do so, but the realization that the ‘up’ is an important part of the whole skiing experience, as well as the down.

Japan’s backcountry trips to the central North Island ski some of the lightest snow on earth.  Huge amounts of snow blankets Hokkaido and this region is known for its deep snow. The locals refer to it as 'angel dust' and if skiing deep powder in a remote backcountry setting is on your list then sign up for one of these two trips. All the accommodation we stay in has its own hot springs and there is nothing better than a good soak after a big day. Plus... the food is excellent.

Our European ski trips have an element of backcountry skiing. These are great trips if mixing up piste and off-piste skiing is what you want.
